After having issues with the Insta360 One R overheating plus the hassle of getting it activated I returned it and bought a Gopro Max. Right out of the box it was easier to setup. Installed battery & my SD card powered on and actually at that point it was ready to take video. No activation or any of that lame crap. I did however connect it to the Gopro app that was already on my phone because I also have a Gopro Hero 6. This was pretty seamless answer a few questions about permissions and we were good to go.
First test was to see if it overheated like the One R did. After 35 minutes of continuous recording in the house it was still going strong so I stopped the recording. The Max created a new clip every 8 minutes which produced a 4004gb file and the best I could tell the files were seamless. The next test was done outside down at my backyard crawling track. Took the TRX6 down for a little drive.
Spent part of the evening getting the feel of the editing on the Gopro app which I put on my iPad to make it easier to see what I was doing. My old eyes need all the help they can get. The workflow was a little than the Insta360 app, as with it you could do the editing right off the sd card while it was still in the camera, you did have to have the camera powered on for this. With the Gopro app you have to 1st down load the videos to the app. I ended up with 2 clips one was 8 minutes the other 6 minutes so it took a little bit of time to get them on the iPad. Once on there editing was pretty straight forward. I couldn’t however get the hang of cutting the files, it was counter intutive to me so instead I left them alone and cut then in Shotcut where I added the 2 rendered clips together. I thought it came out rather well for my 1st time editing 360 clips.
Like everything there is a learning curve but I think the Gopro app will be pretty easy to master. As far as the Gopro Max itself, I like it, it does what it is suppose to do and the audio was very good much better than the One R which had lousy audio in my opinion. It does take a while to render the video after editing but that is to be expeced. Now I need to pickup a case and selfie stick. I have a couple in mind. Also thinking about getting the Ulanzi battery door for it which lets you charge the Max with opening the door, of course it also negates the waterproofing.
